How Alpha-Stim Works for Anxiety and Insomnia

The Alpha-Stim AID device utilises cranial electrotherapy stimulation (CES) for conditions such as anxiety and insomnia. Alpha-Stim CES is a form of non-invasive brain stimulation that applies a patented, low amplitude waveform to the brain via earclip electrodes. Psychiatric disorders, such as anxiety and insomnia, are associated with alterations in electric activity in large-scale brain networks.

*FDA cleared for anxiety and insomnia

Alpha-Stim can be delivered safely at home providing fast, effective, and lasting symptom relief without the side effects of medication. Alpha-Stim can be used at any time during a wide range of daily activities, allowing a patient to live an active and uninterrupted lifestyle.

Mental Health Protocol for Alpha-Stim® AID

4-Step CES Treatment Process

  1. Use alpha conducting solution to wet electrode pads on ear clips
  2. Place ear clips on ear lobes
  3. Turn on Alpha-Stim
  4. Set to comfortable current level for 20-60 minutes

If treating at 2.5 or higher, treat for 20 minutes

If treating at 2 or below, treat for 60 minutes

Finding the Appropriate Current Level

  • The current defaults to 1 when the Alpha-Stim® device is switched on.
  • Increase current slowly until a slight vertigo is experienced (a dizzy feeling), then decrease immediately until the dizziness stops.
  • Decrease immediately if the normal tapping sensation felt on the ear lobes is uncomfortable.
  • For people who have a history of experiencing vertigo such as motion sickness, treat at a low current setting of 1 for one hour or more to prevent residual vertigo after treatment.

What to Expect

Anxiety: Reduction of symptoms are usually experienced during a single treatment but may be experienced hours after treatment.

Insomnia: You’ll often notice improvement after your first treatment, but it can take up to 3 weeks to see full results. Most people can use it before going to sleep and when awakened during the night. However, some people find that the Alpha-Stim® interferes with their sleep and choose to conduct their CES treatment at least 3 hours before going to bed or in the morning to promote better sleeping at night.

TMS Vs CES

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)

TMS is a non-invasive procedure designed to stimulate the nervous system. This innovative approach uses magnetic fields to generate electrical currents that stimulate nerve cells in the brain, potentially enhancing mood regulation.

Benefits:

  1. Non-invasive: TMS offers a non-surgical alternative to treating certain neurological and psychiatric disorders, particularly for patients who don’t respond well to medication.
  2. Outpatient-friendly: Patients can return to daily activities, such as work or driving, immediately after each session.
  3. Short sessions: Treatments typically last around 30 minutes, making them relatively convenient.

Potential Side Effects:

  1. Minor Side Effects: Patients may experience temporary scalp discomfort, headaches, or fatigue after the sessions.
  2. Serious Side Effects: Although rare (1 in 50,000 stimulations), there is a risk of convulsions.

Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation (CES)

CES is a portable, at-home treatment that applies low-level electrical currents to the brain through electrodes placed on the ears. This method is often used for treating anxiety and insomnia.

Benefits:

  1. Portable: CES devices can be used at home, providing flexibility and convenience for patients.
  2. Non-invasive: The low-level electrical currents used in CES are mild and aim to stimulate the brain in a gentle manner.

Potential Side Effects:

  1. Mild Local Effects: Some users may feel a slight tingling or irritation on the skin where the electrodes are placed.
  2. Headaches: Some patients may experience headaches as a side effect of CES usage.

Have you had TMS treatment for depression at another clinic? Smart TMS can offer you maintenance therapy, too!

What our Patients Say

I didn’t know that I had borderline personality until later in my life and didn’t think that I would ever change but my depression and low mood has gone and I can think about what I do before I do it too.

Mr N

My childhood trauma caused my BPD but I found talking therapies difficult and I felt an urge to spend lots of money to make me feel better. Although I still feel low sometimes it isn’t anywhere near as bad as before I had TMS and I get out of my low mood much quicker than before.

Miss C

I felt like BPD had a big stigma attached and I was worried about my colleagues finding out about my diagnosis. While I could only see situations in black and white before, I’m now more able to see all of the shades of grey in between and handle situations much more calmly.
