NICE Considers rTMS

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

by Dr Leigh A Neal, Medical Director Smart TMS Clinics

The National Institute for Clinical Evidence (NICE) is discussing the use of rTMS for the treatment of depression in a closed meeting on 15 October 2015.

We are expecting NICE to catch up with the FDA and the rest of Europe and approve rTMS, as an evidence based treatment for resistant depression in the UK.

There is more uncertainty about whether it will be considered cost-effective for the cash-strapped NHS. NICE have planned to publish their findings in November 2015.

If they recommend rTMS for depression then the next step will be for the private medical insurers to include it as an insured form of treatment for depression.
