The Royal College of Psychiatrists’ document ‘Statement on Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation for Depression’ reviews rTMS and outlines its potential for expansion in the future.
The document reviews and summarises the non-invasive treatment for depression, which uses magnetic energy to stimulate brain tissue by altering the electrical properties of the cortical neurons.
It praises the effectiveness of the Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation for depression, saying:
“Efficacy of rTMS treatment for major depressive disorder (MDD) and treatment resistant depression (TRD) has been well established over the recent years.”
It also says that rTMS can be safely used in combination with other psychological interventions such as ECT. It can also be used safely alongside neurotropic medications (with the possible exception of medications which reduce the seizure threshold, which clinicians should be aware of).
TMS Clinic Expansion
The report concludes by suggesting a promising future for TMS treatment in the UK with the expansion of TMS clinics:
“Neuromodulation is an emerging new therapeutic field for treatment of neuropsychiatric conditions.
“Over the last decade rTMS has been used widely for the treatment of depression and is now an established safe and effective treatment option for depression and treatment resistant depression.
“We envisage more treatment centres will be established in future as a result of the updated guidance from NICE. “
