“Researchers at Kings College, London have just published results which, have shown in a randomised controlled study, that the core symptoms of anorexia nervosa, including the urge to restrict food intake and feeling fat, are reduced after just one session of rTMS.”
This announcement gives practitioners another potential future application for the use of magnetic stimulation in treating difficult conditions and follows a previous story that rTMS could be a treatment for Bulimia.
Anorexia Nervosa
Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder where a person keeps their body weight as low as possible by restricting the amount of food they eat, making themselves sick or exercising excessively (or a combination of these tactics). It is a serious mental health condition which often develops out of worry about body shape or weight and a desire to be thinner. Many people with anorexia have body dysmorphia – which is a distorted image of themselves, seeing themselves as fat or obese when in fact they’re already very thin.
