What is Ketamine Assisted Therapy?

Ketamine Assisted Therapy is a treatment offered to those dealing with addictions to substances in a way that is harmful to their health. It is a form of therapy that uses psychedelics alongside talking therapies aiming to alter thought patterns and attempting to rid the user of unhelpful thinking and behavioural patterns. You might remember us talking about this treatment before, in this blog post. Ketamine Assisted Therapy is offered widely around the world as a form of treatment.

Smart TMS visit Awakn Bristol

Recently CEO Gerard, and Bristol Practitioner Alicia, attended an open evening at Awakn Bristol. Similarly to Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, Awakn offers Ketamine Assisted Therapy for a range of indications including addiction, anxiety, depression, eating disorders and PTSD.

Gerard and Alicia, say they were very impressed by the team and the clinic. The team are professional, knowledgeable and well versed in dealing with patients with these conditions. The clinic is beautifully decorated in neutral colours, making it a tranquil and restful environment in which to receive Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy.

Whilst there, there were lots of interesting conversations regarding using Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation alongside Ketamine Assisted Therapy. Which opens up a potential area of collaboration and research opportunities in the future between Smart TMS and Awakn.

Adopting New Therapy Options

As TMS and Ketamine Assisted Therapy are both relatively new treatment options, we can empathise with the frustrations voiced at the open evening. This was specifically regarding the treatment getting the attention and recognition as a valid form of treatment. Ketamine assisted therapy is a new, safe and effective treatment that is not being rapidly adopted by the medial community.

This mirrors how we feel about TMS. Although the difference is, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation has a much larger evidence base and has NICE approval. Despite this, TMS acceptance is still lagging behind where it should be. Potentially depriving thousands of recovery from the conditions they suffer from.

We look forward to working with Awakn to provide the best possible outcomes for patients.
