The Daily Express had a feature on 28th April featuring rTMS as ‘Depression cure – THIS surprising therapy could be alternative to taking pills‘.
“A DEPRESSION treatment where the brain is stimulated by a deep magnetic pulse could be an alternative to taking antidepressants.”
Dr Leigh Neal
Dr Leigh Neal MD FRCPSYCH, Consultant Psychiatrist at Smart TMS London, provided expert advice on how rTMS – Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation – can be used to treat depression without medication, saying that it could be of massive benefit to the NHS if the depression could be widely treated with a course of rTMS, by freeing up GP time and saving the NHS millions of pounds on antidepressant medication – as well as improving the quality of life for patients.
The Express article stated:
“TMS therapy has been hailed as a good alternative for patients who cannot tolerate the side effects associated with antidepressant medications or do not wish to take them.
“The treatment has been shown to have positive results with clinical trials showing one in two patients achieved ‘significant relief of symptoms are four weeks of treatment’ and one in three experiencing complete remission after six week of treatment.”
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation
TMS treatment is an MRI-strength magnetic pulse which is used to stimulate the brain by accurately focusing on the area associated with depression – the left pre-frontal cortex.
Dr Leigh Neal told the Express:
“We target an area – think of it as the size of a circle with a 4cm diameter.
“If you repeatedly stimulate the brain in the same area it causes changes in the brain.”
This pulse is thought to stimulate blood flow and activity in regions of the brain that are found to be underactive in patients with depression – areas relating to emotion.
TMS is delivered as a course of treatment, with the effects building up progressively with repeated sessions.
