Happiful: Men’s Mental Health – Are you suffering from depression in silence?

Are Men Suffering From Depression In Silence?

Happiful, the monthly mental health magazine, highlighted exclusive research by Smart TMS, suggesting that men are suffering from depression in silence. With 1 in 4 men in the UK reporting to have experienced undiagnosed depression, treatment needs to be more available now than ever.

The feature detailed the desire many men have for their GP to offer alternative treatment to anti-depressants when seeking help. The potential side effects of anti-depressants (including weight gain, fatigue and sexual dysfunction) are well documented. Could it be that men are avoiding their GP because they believe there is no other solution?

Happiful continue to inform their readers;

“Whilst medication in the form of antidepressants is one option many find can help combat depression, many may not realise it is not the only option”

Suggestions made by the popular online and printed magazine include: CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy), IPT (Interpersonal Therapy) and self help groups. However, it’s clear that these alternatives all have one thing in common – talking!

If the stigma that makes 41% of men not want to speak out about their mental health was broken down, would men feel more able to approach their family, friends or a medical professional? Journalist Bonnie Eve Gifford thinks so;

“We really underestimate the power of talking. According to research from 2016, over 60% of us have felt like a ‘weight has been lifted’ after speaking about mental health issues. Nearly half of us keep our worries and concerns our ourselves despite an overwhelming 82% saying meaningful conversations are beneficial to our wellbeing. Discussing sensitive issues can be key to not only dispelling the stigma around them, but also in helping find vital support when needed.”
