Does the NHS Cover rTMS in England?

Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

Many patients interested in the benefits of rTMS treatment, whether for depression or a range of other conditions, will naturally wonder whether they could find treatment on the NHS.

Even though the treatment of depression with rTMS was approved by NICE in 2015, unfortunately, TMS treatment is on the NHS is extremely limited.

The team at Smart TMS are only aware of two few forward thinking mental health trusts which have gone so far as to invest in a machine (Northampton and New Camden).

Of the two, Northampton Trust has been doing it for a couple of years, making it the most established provider in the UK. New Camden is a recent addition.

In both cases, treatment is only available for depression. As NHS treatment it will also be subject to referral, strict criteria and waiting lists.

Other NHS trusts will doubtless be considering investing in machines for the future, but with budget restrictions we expect this to have limited impact on overall availability of free treatment on the NHS; at least in the short to mid term.

SMART TMS CLINICS

Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation is now available privately in London, based at The Smart Clinics Brompton Cross (South Kensington).

rTMS represents a technological breakthrough in the treatment of depression. Research is now showing potential for treating a variety of other conditions too, without the need for medication, by working directly on the relevant area of the brain.

Smart TMS was the first UK clinic to offer treatments for anything other than depression.
