A recent patient shares their experience of TMS treatment for OCD.
My obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) started developing back in late 2018. Little did I know, I thought it was my drug addiction finally taking its toll on me. I started having severe intrusive thoughts about doing stuff I wouldn’t ever act upon.
All these put together, had really brought me down and one day, I decided enough was enough and broke down to my family about all these thoughts. Thank goodness they listened to me and understood that I needed to be taken to the hospital. I had scans, interviews and even a crisis team member extract every bit of information out of me and conclusively, we come to an agreement that it may potentially be a drug psychosis.
As soon as I got home that night, I smoked one last joint and went to bed. When I woke up the next morning, I started my sobriety instantly and made it look so easy, given how long I’ve been on drugs for. A couple of days later I had a crisis team visit me to check up on things, like how I am, whether I have lost my appetite, sleeping ok etc. Then after a few weeks of that, they prescribed me with some sleeping tablets. After about a month, they referred me to a C.B.T therapist for a 20-session course but unfortunately, that didn’t work.
Ultimately after months of therapy, medication, and research, my GP finally diagnosed me with OCD. As relieved as I was to finally crack the case with what was wrong with me, I still felt that I needed to get rid of it some way or another. So, the doctor prescribed me with anti-depressants, which I only took for 2 months and threw them away because I didn’t want to go down the medication route.
18 months later I felt as if my OCD was getting worse but just about bearable considering I am not on drugs anymore to give me anxiety. So, I researched on google treatment for OCD without medication or therapy and there came along Smart TMS. I spoke to a lovely lady named Fleur who told me to fill out some details online and send them off to see if would be approved for treatment and luckily, they did. They explained to me all the details of the treatment, such as what they do, where the closest clinic is, the prices and the remission rate.
So, after booking my treatment, it was time to go and start my first session. When I arrived, I was warmly welcomed by the receptionist and was escorted to the practitioner who would be treating me. I was really nervous on the first day because I had no idea what I was getting myself in for. But after the first few conversations with the lovely practitioner, I started to feel comfortable again.
After a couple of weeks, I really started to notice improvement with my mind, I started to let thoughts and compulsions slip away from my mind without causing some form of anxiety. So, I started looking forward to getting more sessions booked in.
The treatment itself from personal experience, wasn’t painful or uncomfortable, but it did make my eyes twitch.
After my final session, I said my final goodbyes to everyone and walked out of there with my head held up high. For the first time in 3 years, I have severely improved drastically with hardly any intrusive thoughts now and even if I do get one, 2 or even 3 just pop randomly on a random day, I can just let them slide with having to perform any rituals.
Lastly, I would just like to offer my sincere appreciation to Smart TMS for their help and patience with me.
