Sarah Lancashire’s Depression in the News

“Tranquillisers were the worst thing”

Actress Sarah Lancashire has opened up to the media about her struggles with depression, describing her twenties as “a write-off” due to tranquilisers.

She has admitted to suffering from depression since the age of 17, hiding a 14-month breakdown while working 10 hour days on Coronation Street. Prior to landing the role on the soap, she’d missed auditions as she felt unable to travel to London and had even had suicidal thoughts on 2 occasions.

Sarah Lancashire told The Sun,

“Tranquillisers were the worst thing for it. I ended up in a terrible mess. My twenties were a write-off.

“It’s a cruel illness because you can’t see it and you can hide it so well. At least, I can. I’m a genius at hiding it. I think a lot of people are. Actors are bloody marvellous at hiding.”

She says she was saved by her mother taking her to see a doctor, a decision Sarah says ultimately “gave me my life back”.

Professional Help for Depression

Reaching out for professional help is the first step to tackling issues such as clinical depression.  Treatment doesn’t have to mean anti-depressants or tranquilisers, there are now alternative treatments available.

rTMS (Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) has now been approved by NICE as an effective and safe method of treating depression in the UK.

Smart TMS Clinics

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a technological breakthrough in the treatment of depression. The treatment is now available in London, based at The Smart Clinics Brompton Cross (South Kensington).
