Testimonial: TMS Treatment for OCD

A patient who had struggled with OCD for nearly 3 decades has given his account of treatment with repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation at Smart TMS, London.

He explains how TMS therapy helped where other treatments had failed:

Mr J’s Story

“I was first diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder 27 years ago. In that time I had undergone various forms of therapy and treatment in addition to receiving medication. Although this had alleviated the symptoms to some extent, the OCD was still having a major effect on my life.

“The TMS treatment has eliminated almost all of the distressing and unwanted thoughts, and therefore the time spent ruminating and the need to constantly discuss them and worry about them. This has enabled me to function properly and lead a much happier life. My level of fatigue has greatly reduced.

“The TMS treatment was not only effective, but the team involved were very helpful and professional, from the first thoroughly conducted consultation through to the actual treatment itself. There was also a great follow up and aftercare service.

“I will be informing my GP of how well this truly 21st Century approach has worked.”

About OCD

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is a serious mental health condition which is characterised by a cycle of obsessions – unwanted, intrusive and often disturbing thoughts – and compulsions or urges.

OCD is deeply distressing for the patient and can last for many years. It can be quite debilitating, affecting quality of life and even ability to work or carry out normal day to day functioning.

It is thought to affect 12 in every 1,000 people, which equates to over 741,000 of the UK population, according to OCD UK. Over half of these are believed to be ‘severe’ with less than a quarter classed as ‘mild’.

Traditional OCD treatments are medication, talking therapies (e.g. CBT) or exposure therapy – confronting the obsession and learning to manage the urges.

rTMS for OCD

Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation therapy offers a new treatment option for OCD patients. It is a non-invasive treatment which uses the power of magnets to work upon the affected areas of the brain.

Smart TMS is one of very few centres offering this treatment for OCD. A spokesperson explained:

“On the basis of research, we believe that rTMS – Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation could offer sufferers of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) an alternative treatment option using Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation to work directly on the associated areas of the brain.

“It would also offer the benefit of being a non-medication approach, avoiding potentially unpleasant side-effects associated with drugs.”

The treatment can be expected to improve associated depression and anxiety too, conditions which often accompany OCD.
