The importance of holidays for mental health

Holidays don’t always have to mean going abroad or travelling far away from home in order to have a break. The changes and updates to lockdown restrictions have no doubt caused disruption to people’s lives and plans, including plans to go away on holiday. As lockdown measures are currently set to end on the 19th July, thoughts turn to holidays. Whether you’re looking to travel or stay closer to home, our Manchester based practitioner Abie, takes a look at why holidays are important for mental health.

Anticipation

The benefits of a holiday can begin even before you leave the house. Having something positive to look forward to can improve our overall sense of well-being and can actually help to overcome stressful situations. Research has found that thinking about a future event, such as an imminent holiday, can reduce impulsive behaviour. Many people also report that anticipating experiences is more enjoyable than looking forward to material gifts – such as birthday presents. Therefore, even booking a holiday can reduce stress, and enable us to better deal with stressful situations.

Sunny Moods

Simply travelling to a warmer climate or making the most of when the weather is good closer to home can have a positive impact on mental and physical health. Sunlight exposure has been linked to increased serotonin release and vitamin D production. Not only that, but vitamin D is also great for your bones, skin and provides an immune system boost to help you fight off any illness. Research has found that a deficiency of vitamin D and serotonin could be connected to depression, therefore catching those extra rays could be great for your mood. Additionally, serotonin is important for mood regulation and your sleep-wake cycle. So, soak up those rays, but don’t forget your sun cream!

New Experiences

Holidays are also a great way to learn something new or discover a new hobby. Mastering new skills can boost your self-esteem and increase your confidence, meaning that you are more likely to try new things in the future. Taking part in activities like this will also be fun and make the holiday one to remember all while boosting your mood.

Disconnect

Try to leave your mobile phone and technology at home. This can allow you to truly enjoy the moment, and experience what’s around you. If you are vacationing alone, this can give you some well needed ‘you’ time – you will be able to relax without any distractions. If you are travelling with others, this will enable you to be more engaged and connect with them on a deeper level.

Surprisingly, the effects of a holiday can also have a positive impact on your return to work. The feelings of rejuvenation and replenished energy levels can translate to greater motivation and productivity in the office. So, if you ever needed an excuse to book a holiday, this is it!

Even a short break close to home or a day off with fun activities planned can be enough to get a much needed boost, rest and relaxation and shouldn’t be as reliant on any travel restrictions or changes to lockdown rules.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
