BBC’s The One Show featured the development of rTMS – repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation – for treating anorexia.
This groundbreaking trial explores the use of treatment for a condition which affects many people.
There are 72,000 people in the UK who have been diagnosed with the mental illness. Traditional treatments include psychological therapies and medication, but these are not always successful as anorexia nervosa is an extremely difficult condition to treat. Patients can suffer for years or even a lifetime.
TMS treatment works by directly stimulating the brain using special magnetic equipment. The treatment has been approved for treating depression, but there are a number of further potential applications for TMS treatment, including anorexia, where the habits are very ingrained. TMS brain stimulation intervenes at a neural level, targeting specific areas of the brain to reestablish normal thought pathways.
SMART TMS CLINICS
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a technological breakthrough in the treatment of depression with a variety of further treatment applications.
The treatment is now available for depression and a host of other conditions in London, based at The Smart Clinics Brompton Cross (South Kensington).
On the basis of research, we believe that rTMS could, in the future, offer sufferers of anorexia an alternative treatment option using transcranial magnetic stimulation to work directly on the associated areas of the brain. This is an area of active research which we are monitoring closely.
