Trying something new can be a daunting experience. An experience we are all familiar with in one way or another. But it can be especially daunting when receiving a new treatment, that you have never tried before, for a condition you have been suffering with for a potentially very long time.

All of us at Smart TMS understand this about TMS treatment and that this can be how our patients feel. Therefore we have a great network of responsive and experienced practitioners. Who will aim to always make you feel comfortable when visiting our clinics.

TMS treatment is your time, where you can do something for yourself. Our practitioners and patient care advisors have been thinking about some top tips and hints that could help you throughout your TMS treatment.

Treatment Top Tips:
1. Always ensure you have had sufficient food and drink prior to your appointment. Staying hydrated can be good for how you feel during and after your treatment and eating a meal beforehand can keep up your blood sugar up and provide you with protein which aids treatment effectiveness. We also require that you to not consume any alcohol prior to treatment.
2. Get enough sleep prior to and following your appointment, this will help promote the benefits of the treatment.
3. Read a book or ask your practitioner to play music or a podcast whilst you are having treatment. This can help to keep you feel more relaxed and make having treatment a pleasant experience. We advise not to use any equipment that may interfere with the magnetic coil during treatment, unless more than 30cm away, this includes mobile phones and headphones.
4. Wear comfortable clothing. When receiving treatment you have to remain still in the treatment chair, so ensure you are wearing comfy clothing or maybe even bring a blanket and pillow with you!
5. In between treatments, why not take a look around the areas the clinics are in (In Hampshire there is a very scenic Fareham Creek trail walk!)
6. Remember that ups and downs are normal, and it is not uncommon for patients to experience a dip for a few days, even after responding well to the treatment initially. So don’t lose faith in the process.
7. Use all the tools available to you. While TMS works to address the neurological imbalances causing your condition, try to incorporate other approaches which can improve your well-being. Work on the exercises provided in your welcome pack and try to set aside some time for self-care and getting back into the activities you enjoy.
8. And finally, be patient and optimistic. TMS takes time to start having its effects. For many people it can take 10-15 sessions, and there are a proportion of patients who will show a delayed response.

We hope this helps you in discovering what might help you feel the best throughout your treatment journey.
