Dr Leigh Neal explains what happens when a person is diagnosed with depression

“When someone is diagnosed with depression, they’ll normally go along and see their General Practitioner and the GP will usually prescribe a course of antidepressants and refer them for psychological treatment which might typically be CBT.”

What is CBT?

CBT stands for ‘Cognitive Behaviour Therapy’.

This is a talking therapy which helps patients to deal with depression, anxiety and other mental health issues. The principle of the therapy is to change the way people think and behave by breaking the cycle of negative thoughts and feelings. Patients are shown how to deal with seemingly overwhelming problems by breaking them down into smaller and more manageable components.

GPs may be able to refer patients for CBT free on the NHS, but this could be subject to availability and is likely to involve a wait. In some areas, computer-based CBT is available, which enables patients to access self-help systems.

CBT can be very effective for some people, but it doesn’t work for everyone.

Smart TMS in London offers TMS treatment for patients with depression. The vast majority have already tried traditional treatments first (CBT and/or antidepressants).
