What is TMS?

“Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation is the transfer of magnetic energy to the brain which then stimulates the brain and works on those areas of the brain where there’s a reduction in excitability, particularly in depression; which then reverses those changes and that’s how it works towards curing depression.

Who is Considered for TMS?

“When considering patients for TMS we’re guided by the NICE guidelines which were produced in 2015. These basically say that as long as patients are properly advised of all the different options for treatment for depression such as CBT and antidepressants that they can be offered TMS as one of those options.”

How Effective is TMS?

“TMS is very effective in the treatment of depression. The results from the RCTs, the Randomised Control Treatment studies, indicate remission rates of about 30-40%. Another third get a substantial reduction in symptoms. However, we’ve noticed from the private clinics and from research from private clinics and from our own data set that round about 70% of the patients we’re treating go into remission; so those are very good results.”

Private rTMS for Depression Treatment

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a technological breakthrough in the treatment of depression without drugs.

As well as depression, which is approved by NICE, there is clinical evidence for a variety of further potential treatment applications including: Cocaine Addiction, Alcohol Dependence, Depersonalisation Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), PTSD, Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD).

The treatment is now available for private patients in London at Smart TMS, a specialist provider of the innovative treatment based at The Smart Clinics Brompton Cross (South Kensington).
