Many patients find themselves on antidepressants for years, unable to find respite from depression while unable to stop the medication for fear of suffering a greater depressive episode.
It is a frustrating, vicious cycle that leaves sufferers and their families wondering what else can be done when antidepressants are ‘not enough’.
Medication management and talking therapies (e.g. counselling, CBT) are common treatment approaches for depression but are not always successful.
Now there is another option. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) has been approved by NICE in the UK as well as the FDA in USA for treating depression.
TMS is a noninvasive procedure for patients suffering from Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), treatment-resistant depression or severe depression. It is medication-free and offers a completely alternative approach to treating depression.
The treatment has been clinically proven and can have the potential to improve the quality of life among adult patients by putting their depression into remission. General research shows approximately one in two patients experience a significant reduction in depressive symptoms after using TMS, and one in three patients will reach complete remission.
However, at Smart TMS, figures are better. In a study of 70 consecutive patients, 75% had a significant reduction in their symptoms and 60% went into remission.
This means that TMS has a higher rate of effectiveness than some antidepressants.
TMS Neuromodulation
Transcranial magnetic stimulation works through a process known as neuromodulation. The treatment uses magnetic pulses to stimulate the areas of reduced activity associated with positive emotions. It is thought that the magnetic pulses increase blood flow and rebuild pathways in the stagnant area, so that over course of treatment, patients are able to feel more positive. Many describe that they suddenly rediscover ‘joy’ and ‘happiness’.
