As X Factor returns for another season, singer Chris Maloney has gone public about his battle with depression and treatment using transcranial magnetic stimulation therapy at Smart TMS.
The Daily Star Sunday ran a feature entitled:
“I’m zapping my brain with magnets to try & beat depression”
The feature explains that the 40-year old former X Factor finalist has suffered mental health problems for over 20 years. However, it seems that TMS treatment is helping him to beat his depression as well as anxiety.
The Daily Star Sunday explains:
“The non-invasive procedure sends electric currents into parts of the brain affected by disorders including depression, anxiety and OCD.”
Christopher continued:
“A generator is placed on the right side of your head. It’s non-invasive but I think you can feel it working. I’ve been having sessions for the past few weeks and found it to be quite therapeutic.”
He explains how he felt about treatment:
“I was sceptical at first. I was scared. But I decided to give it a go and haven’t had any side effects. It seems to be working really well.”
He told the Daily Star Sunday that his depression had started over 20 years ago:
“I’ve had depression since I was a child. It started when I was badly bullied. It got to the point where I was thinking about throwing myself under a bus or about another way to kill myself. I learned to deal with it as I grew up.
Chris found the experience of being on the X factor made his condition worse:
“When I did X Factor there was so much pressure and the overnight fame affected me. It triggered the depression and it came back 10 times worse than before.
“I ended up having a breakdown because I was struggling so much. I would spend 3 days in bed. I just wouldn’t leave the house. And I’d cry a lot, as if someone had died.”
Doctors prescribed medication but Chris says the antidepressants made him feel ‘like a zombie’. He also had therapy but that was also unsuccessful. As a last resort, he tried TMS, transcranial magnetic stimulation therapy, with Smart TMS in London.

He says:
“My depression and anxiety seem to have gone completely.
“I want people to know about this treatment because it could help others.”
