Express: Third Baby Personality Traits

Expert Advice from Chloe Ward, at Smart TMS

After the birth of the Royal baby Cambridge, a brother for George and Charlotte, The Express were interested to find out what personality traits a third baby may be expected to have.

The article says that birth order is ‘a key that can unlock personalities’.

Chloe Ward from Smart TMS was invited to give her expert opinion. Chloe has a BSc in Psychology and MSc in Counselling Psychology.

She says that birth order is an influence on a person’s personality. She explained:

“The youngest of the family tends to be fun loving, uncomplicated, outgoing but attention-seeking behaviours may also occur at times.

“The third born can also show rebelling activities due to trying to gain their status in the family, and generally tends to be more creative and rebellious due to the way parenting can change from the oldest to the youngest child.

“They tend to be outgoing, persistent and a great storyteller.”

One theory is that experienced parents tend to be more relaxed with their third child than for the first or second. Equally, psychologists have suggested that sibling’s personalities differ as they adopt different strategies to win their parents attention and favour.

Another influence is that of siblings. Chloe explained:

“The interaction between siblings plays a role in teaching kids how to interact with the rest of world around them so it makes sense that someone growing up in the role of the eldest child may behave differently in society than someone growing up in the role of a baby of the family.

“The gender can affect how birth order affects a child’s personality and the age gap between siblings: the larger the age gap the more influential siblings may be on the third born’s behaviour.”

Sibling rivalry can also influence personality. Chloe told the Express:

“Competition among brothers and sisters in a nuclear family is an important influence in shaping the personalities of children who grow up in middle-class Western societies.”
