rTMS stands for Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation – a treatment for a variety of conditions from depression to OCD.
In terms of how it works, the R for Repetition – is absolutely key to getting a strong and sustainable result.
rTMS – Repetition of Treatment
Why is the repetition so important in rTMS Treatment?
Think about bodily fitness. Working out once or twice is always better than inactivity, but to build up muscle and strength or achieve weight loss goals takes longer and is done through repeated sessions.
rTMS works by using a magnetic field to produces currents in neurons in the prefrontal cortex, strengthening circuits in the area. One or two treatments may not show much of a difference – if any. However, it is when the treatment is continued on a daily basis that the repeated applications of the field produce an effect.
So while the first few days may make no noticeable difference, patients often find that after a number of treatments, their depression starts to lift quite dramatically and suddenly.
This is a consequence of a stronger prefrontal cortex with new neurons made and turned on.
rTMS Treatment
rTMS offers medics a medication-free, non-invasive treatment which can work directly on the brain to ‘reset’ certain patterns. In the UK, this treatment is NICE approved for treating depression.
There is strong research to support rTMS for treating a host of other conditions too. Smart TMS in London is among very few in the UK using TMS technology to treat other conditions. The clinic has treated patients for DPD (depersonalisation disorder) and cocaine addiction – see testimonials.
Smart TMS Clinics
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a technological breakthrough in the treatment of depression with a variety of further potential treatment applications including addiction.
The treatment is now available in London, based at The Smart Clinics Brompton Cross (South Kensington).
