Video: Side Effects of Antidepressants

What to Expect

Antidepressants are generally the first treatment that a patient diagnosed with depression can expect from the GP.

However, many patients have concerns about the potential side-effects associated with antidepressant medication.

Dr Leigh Neal explains what happens what side-effects a patient may experience while on antidepressants:

“Side effects of the newer generation of antidepressants typically would be nausea, weight gain and sexual dysfunction in a significant proportion of patients.

“A lot of patients describe a kind of numbing or flattening of mood with antidepressants; so mood, although they’re no longer depressed, their mood doesn’t completely return to normal.”

The NHS gives a list of potential side-effects depending on the type of antidepressant medication.

How do Antidepressants Work?

Antidepressants are thought to work by increasing levels of neurotransmitters in the brain. Neurotransmitters are a group of chemicals including serotonin and noradrenaline which can improve mood and emotion.

Antidepressants can treat the symptoms of depression, but they may not necessarily tackle the root cause, so patients are sometimes advised to have talking therapies such as CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy) alongside medication to learn how to better deal with negative emotions or to tackle issues causing the state of depression.

Smart TMS in London offers TMS as an alternative medication-free treatment for patients with depression. The vast majority have already tried traditional treatments first (antidepressants and/or talking therapies).

Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) is a technological breakthrough in the treatment of depression without drugs.

The treatment was approved by NICE for treatment of depression in 2015. There is also clinical evidence for a variety of further potential treatment applications including: Cocaine Addiction, Alcohol Dependence, Depersonalisation Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), PTSD, Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD).

The treatment is now available for private patients in London at Smart TMS, a specialist provider of the innovative treatment based at The Smart Clinics Brompton Cross (South Kensington).
