Encouraging news for those suffering with depression was published in the American Journal of Psychiatry, as research suggested that TMS treatment had lifted depression in 9 out of 10 patients.Researchers at Stanford University School of Medicine, USA, studied a new form of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) that they dubbed the Stanford Accelerated Intelligent Neuromodulation Therapy, or SAINT.
The preliminary study suggests that this intensive treatment involving precisely targeted magnetic brain stimulation had a good success rate in relieving depression and prevent suicidal thoughts. 19 out of 21 participants (90.5%) met remission criteria. All participants had been experiencing suicidal thoughts before the trial – none reported them after rTMS treatment. A month after treatment, 60% were still in remission.
The only side effects reported during treatment were fatigue and some discomfort during treatment, making it a safe way to treat depression. The safety and success rate make rTMS a compelling potential alternative to traditional treatments like antidepressant medication or ECT, which can have unpleasant side effects and are not always successful.
It should be noted that it was an open trial with no control group or placebo. However, the high success rate is seen as extremely encouraging.
