Portsmouth News: TMS Helps After 28 Year OCD Battle

The Portsmouth News featured the story of a Smart TMS patient who had treatment for long-standing Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD):

Southsea man battling OCD for 28 years sees symptoms reduce after treatment

The feature includes an moving interview with 46 year old Alex Jones and his wife, looking at his experience of OCD over the years and how repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation treatment at Smart TMS has finally given some relief.

The Portsmouth News article explains how architect Alex’s OCD took hold:

“The 46-year-old’s condition started with the typical symptoms of regular hand-washing and anxiety. But it soon got worse and caused paranoid delusions, leaving Alex fearing he had beaten up people and even deliberately run someone over – when he hadn’t.

“The OCD caused him to have a nervous breakdown and after he lost his job for eight months, his symptoms peaked, leading to depression. It was then he sought help from his GP.

“But eight years after starting treatment, Alex, from Southsea, was still suffering after talking therapies, drugs and cognitive behavioural therapy made no difference to his OCD.”

It was Alex’s wife who first learned about Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) treatment, an innovative therapy which uses magnetic pulses to stimulate areas of the brain affected by depression, anxiety and other mental health disorders including obsessive compulsive disorder.

After treatment at Smart TMS, Alex is now almost completely free of symptoms and can look forward:

“OCD attacked every aspect of my life and I almost lost it all. In the beginning I hid the condition from friends, and had to defer my university course for a year.

“Until TMS treatment, I had given up hope of living a normal life but now I feel positive about the future.”

Alex added:

“I am hugely grateful to my wife, family and friends who stuck by me and supported me through the years of torment.

“It was they, together with the team at Smart TMS, who got me through this.”
