TMS treatment for primary chronic insomnia

There’s no denying that a good night’s sleep can do us the world of good.

When you suffer from insomnia, it isn’t only your mental health that’s impacted, but your physical health too. TMS can help you sleep better and for longer.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is an innovative approach to treating primary chronic insomnia. It’s a non-invasive therapy that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate the area of the brain that controls your emotional reactions and regulates mood.

Everybody struggles to sleep from time to time but insomnia is diagnosed when the sleep problems become a regular event. Insomnia can, in many cases, be caused by another condition, like anxiety. If you feel particularly anxious at bedtime, you may lay awake thinking, but primary chronic insomnia can't be attributed to another disorder and is a serious condition in itself.

Symptoms of primary chronic insomnia include:

• Struggling to fall asleep, even if you’re tired
• Waking up several times a night
• Waking up unusually early and being unable to go back to sleep
• Finding it difficult to concentrate during the day because you’re tired
• Being unable to nap despite being tired

Although primary chronic insomnia can leave you feeling helpless, Smart TMS can improve your sleep and help you to get into a healthy sleep routine again.

Research into treating primary chronic insomnia with TMS shows that TMS is best at improving the REM (rapid eye movement) sleep phase, providing high quality sleep leaving you feeling better rested.

How does TMS treatment work for primary chronic insomnia?

TMS calms the activity in the area of the brain that causes insomnia to improve sleep quality. It only treats the brain circuits involved in your condition, rather than flooding the brain with chemicals.

The treatment prescribed for primary chronic insomnia will consist of 30 sessions, split into two courses of 15 sessions. These sessions are booked over three to six weeks, with each session lasting 30 minutes each. Some patients are able to have more than one session in a day.

What our patients say

I've gone from sleeping for 30-90 minutes each night to having a minimum of five hours, which leaves me feeling refreshed and helps me cope with my day much better. I've even managed to have a nap on a couple of afternoons, which is unheard of for me.

Miss C

My family thought that my insomnia was just me laying awake worrying but it was so much more than that... I felt delirious during the day and would toss and turn all night but now I can go to bed at the same time as my wife and not be banished to the spare room for fidgeting, which means she gets a better sleep too!

Mr Y

I've never had much of a problem falling asleep at night but staying asleep was a different matter, I could wake up anywhere between every 20 minutes to every hour and I never felt like I'd had any rest worth having. I knew I needed help and now I've had rTMS my GP has agreed I'm fit to return to work.
